Summer Sales Tax Free Weekend
Get ready to shop! Massachusetts will celebrate its third annual sales tax free weekend on August 12-13. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney signed a law creating the tax holiday weekend, allowing the government to pick up the 5% Massachusetts sales tax.
All retail sales under $2,500 will be exempt from sales tax during the tax free weekend. There are some restrictions to note: all sales of motor vehicles, boats, meals, telecommunications services, gas, steam, electricity, tobacco, and any single item with a price exceeding $2,500 do not qualify for the tax exemption and will be subject to tax.
Many states are following suit and offering similar tax weekend breaks, including Connecticut, D.C., Maryland, Florida, and Virginia. The sales break brings a needed boost to the economy during what is typically considered a slow time of the year.
Get your lists ready, grab your wallets, and head out to the stores on August 12 and 13.
