Software Shifts to the Cloud
Software vendors are continuing their shift in providing their products to the cloud. One of the notable big names making this switch is Adobe. Soon Adobe will provide access to their Creative Suite software via fee based subscription services through the Creative Cloud, and do away with the former model of purchasing software by a download or disc.
Some of the benefits to businesses with this change in software model is that the fee to get started and up and running will go down. Rather than needing a large upfront cost to buy the software, and in some instances a server to run the software on, businesses will be spending a lower monthly fee to essentially rent the software.
In the Silicon Valley MercuryNews.com article "Could software: From kooky craze to tech's hottest sector", they talk about how much an investment big name tech companies like Oracle, IBM and SAP are making in the cloud software space. The figures are in the billions of dollars range.
