Malware Phone Calls
One of the socially engineered security scams we still hear about from our customers is the phony tech support phone call. In this scam, the person on the phone (often claiming to be from Microsoft) tells the victim they have computer problems that they can solve. After gaining the victims trust, the person on the phone either has the victim install malicious software, takes control of their computer remotely, and/or requests a credit card so they can bill for their phony services.
All of the above scenarios are examples of scams, and under no circumstance should you engage in a similar phone conversation. If someone calls you suggesting you have computer problems, simply hang up. Microsoft has never proactively called people about this topic, nor have they any plans to do so.
