Fake Microsoft Phone Scam
Some of our customers are reporting they recently received a phone call from someone who says they are calling from Microsoft, when in reality this is a scam. The person on the phone says there is a security problem with your PC and indicates they are a 'security expert' who will help you resolve the problem. The fake security expert may then ask you to perform a series of tasks, allow them to gain remote access to your PC, and may even try and obtain personal credit card information. This is a scam and you should hang up immediately if you receive a similar phone call.
Microsoft is aware of this phone scam, and it is actually nothing new. This particular phone scam has been happening for over a year now, but with the advent of information we received from our customers we can confirm it is still happening. According to the PCWorld article "Microsoft Warns of Internet Phone Scam" the scam could end up costing you $875 in stolen monies and then around $4,800 to undo the damage done on your PC.
If you receive a phone call from someone saying they are calling from Microsoft, we would recommend you simply hang up. Never provide any personal information over the phone in this type of scenario, and do not allow any stranger on the phone to gain remote access to your PC.
