How do I change the SMTP port in my Email client?

The following instructions will walk you through how to change your SMTP port settings. There are certain scenarios which may require you to change your SMTP port settings in order to send e-mail. One example we have seen is with Comcast, where people using Comcast are unable to send outbound e-mail, unless they change their SMTP port setting.

Instructions for Microsoft Outlook

  1. Launch Microsoft Outlook and select Tools, "E-mail Accounts..." or "Accounts" from the menu bar. This will launch the E-mail Accounts Wizard used to create or view an existing e-mail account.
  2. Locate your email account and highlight it to select it.
  3. Click on the "Change" or "Properties" button.
  4. Click on the "More Settings…" or "Advanced" button. This will bring up the "Internet Email Settings" window.
  5. Select the "Outgoing Server" tab, and make sure the following options are selected: "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" AND "Log onto incoming mail server before sending mail".
  6. Select the "Advanced" tab, and in the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" field, first delete out the existing value "25" and then type in its place "587".
  7. Select the "OK" or "Apply" button to save your changes.

Instructions for Outlook Express

  1. Launch Outlook Express and select Tools, "E-mail Accounts..." or "Accounts" from the menu bar.
  2. Locate your email account and highlight it to select it.
  3. Click on the "Properties" button.
  4. Select the "Servers" tab, and click on the option for " My server requires authentication"
  5. Select the "Advanced" tab, and in the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" field, first delete out the existing value "25" and then type in its place "587".
  6. Select the "OK" or "Apply" button to save your changes.

Instructions for Windows Mail

  1. Launch Windows Mail and select Tools, "Accounts..." from the menu bar.
  2. Highlight your email account and click on the "Properties" button.
  3. Click on the "Servers" tab, and make sure the option "My server requires authentication" is checked.
  4. Click on the "Advanced" tab, and in the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" field, first delete out the existing value and then type in its place "587".
  5. Press the "Apply" button to Save the changes, and then the "OK" and then the "Close" button.

Instructions for Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Launch Mozilla Thunderbird, and from the file menu click Tools > Account Settings.
  2. In the left hand pane click on "Outgoing Server (SMTP)".
  3. Next, in the right hand pane click on your outgoing server, and then press the EDIT button.
  4. This will open a new window, in this new window change the port from 25 to 587 and press the OK button.
  5. Press OK to accept the changes.

Instructions for Entourage

  1. Open Entourage, select the Tools menu and from the bottom of the drop-down list select "Accounts".
  2. On the Accounts window under the Mail tab, click on your email account to highlight it and then select "Edit".
  3. The Edit Accounts window should appear opened to the Account Settings tab. At the bottom of the window under Sending mail, check that your SMTP server is set to "mailman.c4.net" if you are using an @c4.net email account, or "mail.yourdomainname.com" if you are using an @yourdomainname.com email account.
  4. Select "Click here for advanced sending options".
  5. In the Override default SMTP port: field enter 587, then select OK.

Instructions for Mac Mail

  1. Open Mail from the Dock or in the Applications folder.
  2. From the Mail menu choose Preferences.
  3. Click the Accounts button, and then click the Account Information button.
  4. From the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" pop-up menu, choose Edit Server List.
  5. Click the "Advanced" button (to the right of "Account Information").
  6. On this screen, where it reads "Server port:", highlight over the existing value and replace it with 587.
  7. Click "OK" and then "Save" to apply and save these changes.
