The Town of Eastham is part of an area called Cape Cod and is known as one of the premier
vacation areas in the world. Millions of tourists come to this region on an annual basis. The Cape
and specifically Eastham, is dotted with paved bicycle paths and bike routes on lightly
traveled ways which draws hundreds of thousands of bicyclists every season. Due to this incredible use of
the trail network the Eastham Police Department has responded by instituting bicycle patrols on the
trails during the daylight hours in the summer. The bicycle trails are heavily used by bicycles, joggers, walkers,
skateboarders and equestrian uses.
The bicycle patrols were started in 1995 to provide a police presence in the trail network to
provide a measure of security and access to emergency services for those occasional injuries. The
mountain bike patrols are very visible and easily accessed by the citizens on a more personal level.
These patrols are welcomed by the users of the trail network and provide a sense of heightened
security. The recreational setting is enhanced to make this one of the safest and affordable forms of
recreational activity on Cape Cod. The bicycle patrols are conducted between the hours daily during the months of July and August.
The
Eastham Police Department uses Raleigh Police Mountain bikes equipped with the
necessary equipment to perform most police patrol functions including emergency
first aid if required.
