The Citizens Police Academy is the cornerstone of our Community Policing Programs. The
academy invites local citizens to attend training programs which are conducted over an 8 to11
week program. Citizens will receive a comprehensive overview of the Eastham Police Department
and its function within the community.
The classes occur weekly in the evening generally 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.. The classes will cover
topics including Crime Prevention, Patrol Functions, Communications, Training, D.A.R.E.,
and OUI
enforcement to name only a few. A complete tour of the facility is also provided. We are also
fortunate to have residing in our community a former U.S. Secret Service Agent who provides a
class on the functions of the U.S. Secret Service and its relationship with local law enforcement. He
was assigned to presidential protection and provides a very interesting program.
Following the completion of the program, citizens are offered a ride-a-long program to experience
first hand the duties and responsibilities of a police officer in their community. We also offer at no
charge the ability to become certified in one person cardio pulmonary resuscitation commonly
called Heart Saver.
The Citizens Police Academy is coordinated through Sgt. Matthew Young. The next academy has
not been scheduled at this time. Applicants must be over the age of eighteen. Applications for the academy may be obtained
HERE.
Voluntary Pre-Academy and Post-Academy surveys are conducted to compile data on the current
perceptions of the citizens about their community, crime, the police department and the
effectiveness of the Citizens Academy. This data will aid us in providing effective service and
structuring the academy to cover the areas of citizens concerns.
