The World Wide Web is part of our
current culture and it is a natural step for the Eastham Police Department to incorporate this
technology into its day to day operating philosophy. In this fast paced period we are striving to
keep abreast of emerging technology and providing police service at the highest level of efficiency
and effectiveness. Our community deserves the best resources available to provide a safe
community which we can all be proud to call our home town. I am proud to call Eastham my home
town and will do everything in my power to maintain the small town character. This is accomplished
by delivering police services IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR COMMUNITY.

Traffic Law Enforcement
The Police Department in Eastham takes traffic law
enforcement very seriously. Eastham has been the unfortunate site of many
serious and fatal traffic crashes, predominately on Route 6. This stretch of
road was designed many years ago and has had many new curb cuts since. The
police department has observed a direct correlation between the level of
enforcement and the number of crashes - the more enforcement, the fewer the
crashes. We patrol vigorously and are strict but fair in our approach toward
enforcement; the safety of our motoring public, as well as the pedestrian and
bicycle traffic, is a top priority.
Commonly asked questions
Q: The officer said
he was using radar but he was going in the opposite direction.
A: Most Eastham
Police vehicles are equipped with moving radar which allows the officer to
determine the speed of oncoming traffic while operating in the opposite
direction.
Q: The officer
followed me for several minutes before pulling me over, why?
A: After observing a
violation and safely catching up to the violating vehicle, the officers
objective continues to be safety. The officer will signal the vehicle to stop in
a place that he/she feels provides the most safety for the officer, the vehicle
stopped and the traffic. The officer may wait to pull over a vehicle for several
minute or travel some distance.
Q: I received a
speeding citation and the fine was huge, why did the officer make it for so
much?
A: All fines are set
by the legislature, the officer has no discretion in the fine amount.
Q: How did the
officer know it was me?
A: Officers are
trained to make a visual observation of the speeding vehicle, identify it and
then use radar to confirm their observation and determine an exact speed. They
then stop the vehicle.
Sex Offenders
People may request information on sex offenders who live
in the Town of Eastham. This request must be made in person at the police
station. Sex offenders are broken into 3 categories: Level 1, Level 2 and Level
3. Level 1 sex offender information is for police use only and cannot be given
to the public. Level 2 sex offender information can be given to the public by
request only. Level 3 sex offender information will automatically be
disseminated throughout the town by the police, alerting all as to his/her
identity and address. This system of information dissemination has been the
subject of much legal scrutiny and is constantly under review. These rules may
change on very short notice; we will attempt to keep this web site information
as current as possible. If you have any specific questions, or to make an
inquiry, please call Det. Benjamin Novotny at 508-255-0551 x217
Unregistered Vehicles
The town of Eastham has a by law prohibiting unregistered
motor vehicles on property under certain circumstances. A person is allowed to
have one unregistered motor vehicle on his/her property as long as it is not
past the front plane of the house. Upon observing a violation the police
department will issue a copy of the by law to the offender and allow a
reasonable amount of time to comply with the by law, either by relocating the
vehicle or removing it. A copy of this by law is available at the police
station.
Truck Enforcement
In addition to our normal patrols, the town of Eastham
has a trained truck enforcement officer, Robert Schnitzer. Officer Schnitzer is
assigned random enforcement patrols where he concentrates his efforts on larger
trucks and commercial vehicles. Officer Schnitzer inspects these trucks for
safety and legal compliance. Officer Schnitzer will soon be attending training
that will give him Federal Department of Transportation certifications and allow
him to expand his enforcement efforts.
