If you are thinking about buying Windows Vista, here are several helpful links to resources that provide information on Vista and compatibility with Vista.
If you are running a computer with Windows XP on it, and want to figure out if you can run Vista on it, Microsoft has developed a "Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor" program to help you. The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a downloadable software program you can run on your machine, and it will provide you with a detailed report which diagnoses your computer system, along with recommendations for running Vista. The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor will run on all 32-bit editions of Windows XP, as well as 32-bit editions of Windows Vista (except Enterprise version).
Microsoft provides information on applications that have qualified for their "Certified for Windows Vista" logo, and also for their "Works with Windows Vista" logo. The essential difference between the "works with" vs. "certified" designation is the testing path of the respective logo program. "Works with" means that your program functions the same as it did on XP. "Certified" means that your program has undergone and passed an extensive 32 test case path, which is more rigorous and wider in its testing scope.
From Microsoft's web site, here is a link to applications which have earned the "Certified for Windows Vista" logo. Also from Microsoft's web site, here is a link to view applications which have earned the "Works with Windows Vista" logo. The applications that exist on this list are not an exhaustive list of applications, but the list is continually being revised as more applications are being tested.
Microsoft also provides information hardware that is Vista compatible. Please note, in order to view this list you must be using Internet Explorer version 6 or higher. You cannot view this list using Mozilla Firefox.
C|Net is another company providing good resources and information on Vista compatibility. C|Net provides a list of "Vista certified PCs" and "Vista certified laptops". C|Net also offers their own "Vista Upgrade Advisor" program, which will diagnose your current computer and provide an assessment of whether your current system is compatible with Vista. The C|Net Vista Upgrade Advisor will run on Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, 2004, Media Center, and also on Vista.
